Jamaican Patties Recipes
A pattie or patty can contain a variety of different fillings such as ground beef, chicken, lobster, shrimp, fish and the list goes on to include ackee and vegetables. The fillings are mixed with spices and then set into a pastry shell glazed with a mixture of turmeric and egg yolk and baked in the oven.
The pattie is found all over the Caribbean, but most people associate its roots with Jamaica. In fact, the beef pattie was a product from the days of colonialism and was introduced in the Caribbean after the migration of slaves from West Africa. The spicey mix of cumin and other curry spices culminate with the fiery heat of a Scotch Bonnet pepper which makes the pattie a delicious snack or meal.
The pattie was introduced into the United States and the United Kingdom in the early 1950′s when West Indian migrants sort work after the war years.
